21_21 DESIGN SIGHT holds an exhibition "Material, or " opening on 14 July 2023. The exhibition director Satoshi Yoshiizumi is renowned for continuously presenting innovative designs from a unique perspective developed through self-initiated research projects. The name, 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT refers to our wish to provide a place where people can look far into "the future". One hundred years from the opening of this exhibition will fall in the year 2121. Our concept is to ponder how the world will look in a year which is coincidentally also the name of this institute. ‘The Original’ doesn’t contain only products from the history of design, but also recent items created in the last two decades, equally well-known and treated as if they were always recognizable.
An underground gallery space
It is read as "two-one two-one design sight."21_21 DESIGN SIGHT has its own symbol, a plaque called "The Product Logo," made of a sheet of metal. The plate, inspired by a style of address display panel seen anywhere in Japan, indicates this facility as being a "place" of design. This also represents something that we see all the time but never pay attention to. It fits our concept that design should give life to the potential hidden within our daily lives.The distance between the numbers 21 and 21 is meant to be the space between human eyes, which describes this place as the "viewpoint" of design, i.e. Design Sight, and how important it is to observe things with a mind free of distractions. Our aim is to promote understanding and interest in design by involving designers, company people, engineers, craftsmen, and the general public.

The museum’s interior serves as a canvas for the art and design it houses, emphasizing the symbiotic relationship between form and function. Ando’s meticulous spatial planning is evident in the seamless flow of the museum’s interior. The carefully curated exhibition spaces allow visitors to engage with design concepts in a dynamic and immersive manner. The architect’s thoughtful consideration of user experience is palpable as one navigates through the interconnected galleries.

Concrete, a durable and long-lasting material, aligns with the architect’s ethos of creating structures that stand the test of time. The museum’s facade not only tells a visual story but also underscores the importance of responsible material choices in contemporary architecture. Walking on, one is not sure whether to enjoy the exhibitions first or the design of the building. Outside light comes in through the large windowpanes and the inner courtyard on the basement floor, with the concrete spaces lit up by spotlights that are placed here and there to highlight the individual exhibition pieces. Most of the exhibitions and workshops here focus on the theme of “everyday life,” and explore the often underappreciated world of design that is hidden in plain sight. 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is a visionary space that celebrates and explores the innovation of design.
The section, the quintessential element of the creative process, highlights six great creators of the past including Ikko Tanaka. Despite seventy percent of the building being located below ground level, a large lightwell lets in natural light. The term "20/20 vision (or sight)" is used to describe perfect vision in English. 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT was named with our intention that it would be a venue which offers vision beyond 20/20 to see what is ahead.

Visitors can explore the Roppongi Hills, a skyscraper complex that combines shops, restaurants, cafes, movie theatres, and the Mori Art Museum, renowned for its contemporary art exhibitions. The National Art Center, Tokyo, another architectural marvel, is nearby, offering an ever-changing lineup of exhibitions. The pieces are accompanied by a graphic display with a large layout of 50 photographs of products. Taken by the photographer Gottingham, the large images lie on the walls behind the products, so visitors can witness details that are difficult to catch with the naked eye.
